Dr Robert Edinger with Son David

Pre-Medical Program, Psychology, Psychiatry

For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of attending medical school.  Growing up in Tehran, I excelled in the sciences and was continually captivated by human physiology and the mysteries and miracles of the mind.  Now, I have reached a point in my academic and professional career where I am intent upon bringing my lifelong goal to fruition, immersing myself in a quality premedical and MD program focusing on Psychiatry.

For years I have been fascinated by the uniqueness of Psychiatry, how most of the anomalies in Psychiatric patients are of thought, feelings and behaviors and are not measurable by equipment, that the tangible is secondary to what can only be sensed.  The skill for diagnosis lies almost completely within the doctor and their counseling acumen, the ability to decode the patient’s feedback.  I have determined that my future lies in Psychiatry, and am eager to take up the challenge and join in a rewarding and fascinating future for myself and for the overall benefit of my future patients.  As a Psychiatrist, I will not only be aiding my patients in their lives, but also their loved ones, giving them back a loving, functioning, and healthier participant in their lives.

I bring with me to the student body and Pre-Medical program a solid foundation in Psychology, as well as nearly half a decade of professional dentistry experiences, direct patient contact, diagnostic and clinical acumen.  Indeed, while pursuing my undergraduate degree, I was able to volunteer in a psychiatric hospital, an experience that gave me amazing insights into the work of a practicing psychiatrist.  I felt all the more certain that this is where my future lay.  Moreover, I enjoyed working in a team of fellow psychology students, building my confidence in my abilities as well as learning the importance of connecting with not just patients but their families as well.

Having lived, been educated and worked in two diverse countries (in addition to traveling to South America and the Caribbean), as well as in different medical set-ups in Canada, I am highly adaptable, and remain positive in my work.  Much more than this, though, I have a worldview and cultural competency that has been built through interacting with patients from not just different socioeconomic backgrounds, but cultures, and age groups.  I thoroughly enjoy bringing about a greater sense of enjoyment to people’s lives, returning their confidence to them, and bringing a smile to their faces.

This heartfelt desire combined with my love of lifetime learning will translate perfectly to the field of Psychiatry, a place where I feel I truly belong.  What is more, my travels to the Caribbean brought me into contact with some of the warmest, friendliest and beautiful people I have ever met, the reason for choosing this setting for my further education.

In today’s society, so many people are aware of the benefits of medications to heal their bodies, and yet fail to see the causal links between our mental and physical health.  The care and upkeep of the citizens of tomorrow is key to our overall health as a society, particularly our children.  To that aim, to our tomorrow, I will be there.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
